Going Medieval

Some weekends, we get tired of the typical routine of going out.  This past Saturday was no exception, so we decided to explore one of Cincinnati’s lesser-known landmarks: Chateau Laroche, a castle nestled in a cozy wooded hollow in Loveland.  This mini fortress was built singlehandedly by a Boy Scout leader named Harry Andrews beginning in the late 1920s, and is manned today by some of his former scouts, all volunteers (and all fittingly eccentric).  The place is remarkably cool and extremely creepy, from the “Wild-Man” in the dungeon and the dragon sculpture peering out from the gardens to a Hitchcock-esque “spy hole” in the upper level.  We can’t help but think Mr. Andrews was a real oddball, which is totally OK by us!

*Disclaimer: No, Betsy did not just get back from a rousing fox hunt.  Those are authentic riding jodhpurs from her younger days as an equestrian, but 100% inauthentic riding boots.
